Quick Facts for New Students
-
Do I need my own bass guitar to start?
Yes, having an instrument at home is essential for regular practice. Developing finger strength, fret hand stretch, and calluses requires frequent, short sessions. Along with a standard 4-string bass, you will need a compact home practice amplifier (or a headphone pocket amp for quiet apartment practice). Our coaches can recommend budget-friendly, comfortable starter setups.
-
Can younger children learn the bass?
Typically, students can start around ages 7 to 8. Standard full-scale (34-inch) bass necks can be wide and heavy for small hands, but young learners can start comfortably on a short-scale bass guitar (30-inch), which features closer fret spacing and lighter body weight.
-
Is the bass easier to learn than the guitar?
Because bass lines typically focus on single-note grooves rather than complex multi-finger chord shapes, beginners can often play their first recognizable song riffs within just a few lessons. As players advance, the focus shifts to timing precision, groove nuance, and tone shaping.
