Quick Facts for New Students
-
Do I need to own a ukulele to start?
Yes, having a ukulele at home is essential for steady progress. Ukuleles are lightweight, portable, and very affordable compared to other instruments. For younger children, a Soprano (21-inch) size is usually best; older kids and adults often prefer a Concert (23-inch) or Tenor (26-inch) size for extra fret room. Our coaches can measure hand reach and recommend quality, budget-friendly models before you buy.
-
Why is the ukulele great for younger beginners?
Children can comfortably start as young as age 5 to 6. The ukulele’s four soft nylon strings require very little finger pressure to press down, eliminating the fingertip soreness often caused by steel-string guitars.
-
Does learning the ukulele help with guitar later?
Yes. The ukulele teaches finger independence, rhythm keeping, strumming control, and fretboard geography. Students who begin on the ukulele transition naturally to acoustic, electric, or bass guitar once their hands are large enough.
