Quick Facts for New Students
-
Do I need to own a trombone to start?
Yes, having a standard Bb (B-flat) tenor trombone at home is essential for regular practice. Muscle memory for your slide positions and embouchure forms through consistent, short daily sessions. Our coaches can recommend durable, easy-blowing starter student models before you purchase.
-
What is the recommended age to start the trombone?
Students typically start around ages 9 to 11. Playing the trombone requires enough arm length to reach the outer slide positions (specifically the 6th and 7th positions) and fully erupted front adult teeth to seat the mouthpiece securely.
-
Can I practice the trombone in an apartment or condo?
Yes. Just like the trumpet, you can use a practice mute or an electronic silent-brass system placed directly inside the bell. This dampens the volume to a quiet conversational murmur, allowing you to practice freely at home without disturbing family or neighbors.
